Why Politics Doesn't Have to be Ew

You're not supposed to bring it up at a dinner party, you're not supposed to mention it to your grandma and you definitely shouldn't shove it down people's throats. You thought right kiddos - I'm talking about politics.

I've never quite understood the concept of 'not being political.' I'm a strong believer in voicing my beliefs and also allowing my peers to voice theirs - that's the beauty of living in the country we live in (thanks s.7 & s.24 - you're pretty fricken rad #FreeAndFair)

I've been super active in politics ever since I was in school. It was my favourite subject and conveniently my favourite thing to 'discuss,' with my mates.

L: Me, 11 years old at my first visit to Parliament House.
R: Me on twitter, venting how annoyed I was about to be at the 2016 federal election being called a week before I turned 18.

Becoming involved with politics at a young age is extremely important. We are the future of the country and thus the international stage, as cliche as it may sound. Young people have such an important insight into the modern day working of the world and it so, so important to have our voices heard.

Every time I chat with a young person, whether they still be in high school or are closer to my own age, I encourage them to join the youth branch of a political party that best fits their own social/economic/environmental beliefs.

Something I found really helpful in high school when having this discussion with my friends was ABC's Vote Compass. It's a bit out of date now (it was developed for the 2016 Federal Election) however it will give you a general idea of your political stance if you have absolutely no idea about politics.

Access Vote Compass by clicking HERE

Don't take it's word for gospel though. Do your research, both within national and international relations. Compare policy positions, look at candidate biographies, keep an eye on the news and see what different parties are proposing within your electorate.

In regards to the youth branches of political parties, these are a great way to dip your toes in the water. Joining one allows you to hang out with people who share the same political values as you while exposing you to amazing experiences on such as campaigning, bettering your public speaking skills and even developing policy!

Most youth branches will operate under their state umbrella. I've linked their main pages below however it is best to search for the ones within your state!

Let me know if you want to chat politics! It's freakin cool mate!
