The Songs of My Childhood
I'm definitely not the only person who has a playlist of songs that remind me of certain period of their life. Living on a station for the first decade of my 20 years on earth (lordy where has the time gone?!) saw many long-haul car trips to regional centres, windmill runs with dad and weekly trips for food stores with mum. Mum and dad bought me my first ipod when I was 6 (the original ipod shuffle, I think dad still has it in a cupboard somewhere!) It was the coolest!
Because of this, I was always listening to a pretty random array of music. Here are the songs that remind me of my early years as a little human.
"Your Song," The Moulin Rouge Version
Okay so Moulin Rouge was my favourite movie as a kid (WTF mum and dad this is 100% not a children's movie!) This is my favourite song in the movie. Primarily because one day, when I was about four, dad told me "I actually wrote this song for your mum." I fully believed him. Then at the end of the clip (the bit where it's all shiny and sparkly,) Dad said, "That's what it looked like when I first met your mum." He probably doesn't remember this but I look back on it now and how HECKIN' cute is that. Nathan you little love bird! Now every time I listen to this song I think about how dad actually wrote it for mum. Cute right?
"7 Years," Norah Jones
The whole 'Come Away with Me,' album reminds me of my mum, this song especially. Mum and I would always listen to a mix of Norah Jones, Nelly Furtado (before she got into rap lol) and Paul Kelly on our way to Kalgoorlie for School of the Air Camps.
"Catch My Disease," Ben Lee
Another one that reminds me of my mumma, she would always crank the volume to this when it came on MTV (do they still play music on that channel?) classic.
"Brown Eyed Girl," Van Morrison
Don't know why I wasn't suspicious about my dad writing all of these hit songs at this point... He also said he wrote this one about my mum. You can defintley see how his styles have evolved over time.
"Father and Daughter," Paul Simon
This was such a hit when 'The Wild Thornberries' movie came out. Dad always says this brings a tear to his eye because it reminds him of me. It kinda does the same to me now (I'm not crying, you are!) Sometimes when I'm feeling homesick I send him the link to make him cry lol.
"I Will Make You Cry," Nelly Furtado
This was a bloody banger, actually, the whole album is a banger! I used to listen to this on my iPod shuffle with my best friend when we visited their station. I was an OG Nelly fan. RIP Original Nelly, miss ya girl xx
Look, there are heaps more but I'm about to board a plane home to see my parents (woo!) so if you want to see more of my favorite music, you can listen to what I used to have on my iPod shuffle by clicking here.
Lemme know your favourite snacks!
